What foods to eat after dental surgery?

The food you eat can help with the regeneration of soft and hard tissues after dental surgery, whether that's a tooth extraction, dental implant, elimination of braces, cysts, and other surgery.The first days after surgery, the soft tissues begin to heal. These tissues are made up of connective tissue, and to promote their growth, it is advisable to eat foods rich in proteins, eggs, minced meat, veal, chicken or turkey.Ingestion of cold foods is recommended since hot foods can cause bleeding and an increase in inflammation. If you drink a cold drink or even ice cream, it can decrease inflammation and bleeding. Avoid foods rich in volatile substances such as garlic, onions, pickle, radish, etc.A soft diet consists of soft foods that you can chew and swallow with relative ease. These foods can be chopped, ground, mashed, or moistened. Eating soft food is recommended as less soluble foods are difficult to chew or swallow. A diet of soft foods will provide you with the vitamins and nutrients you need to speed up the healing process.Fortunately, you have many options to eat after dental surgery:

  • Liquids

You may not be able to chew solid or semi-solid foods immediately after your dentist surgery due to the swelling of your mouth. The main goal at this time is to make sure you get between 48 and 64 ounces (1.4 and 1.9 L) of fluids daily. These may include fresh fruit and vegetable juices, water, gelatin, and flavored drinks without caffeine such as tea, soda, and coffee.

  • Soups

After the procedure, your diet may consist mainly of soups. Try to have warm broth, vegetable soup or soft meats for a couple of days.

  • Bread and cereals

If you have recently had dental surgery or a strong oral injury, eat bread and cereals such as oatmeal, rice, cooked pasta noodles, cream of wheat, corn grits whole or white wheat, whole wheat bread, crackers or flour tortillas. Ensure that these are soft cereals and tortillas, not the hard variety.

  • Fruits and vegetables

You should be able to eat cooked and canned fruits and vegetables. These should be soft enough so you can eat them. Try, for example, sliced ripe bananas, baked apples, baked or grilled sweet potatoes, spinach, and canned sliced carrots.

  • Protein-based foods

Some soft, protein-based foods such as tofu, lean beef, chicken, tuna, liver, and salmon stewed, minced, or roasted or broiled are allowed. You can also eat some soft scrambled eggs.

  • Dairy products

It is a good idea to incorporate dairy products into your soft diet. Milk, yogurt, smoothies, custards, natural ice cream, cottage cheese, soft cheese, and cream cheese can be consumed daily.
